Expatriate testimonial: Enzo Baudet, mechanical designer in Montreal

Let's meet a new French expatriate who arrived in Montreal in 2022. Find out why and how he decided to come and live in Canada.

🎙Hello Enzo, can you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Enzo Baudet, I am 27 years old, I am originally from Angers in France and I now live in Montreal, Canada. I am a mechanical designer in Boucherville near Montreal and I came to Canada with a Young Professional permit.

🎙Why did you choose to come and live in Canada and more specifically in Montreal?

Above all, to live a real adventure in another country while keeping values and principles that I like and in which I recognize myself. Canada has always been a country that attracted me since I started working. The landscapes, the culture of the country, the art of living are things that made me want to come and live here.

Nevertheless, I never launched myself, I had other projects in France. I kept this idea in a corner of my head, but I never took the steps like registering in the pools for example.

Then, last year (2021) Talentech contacted me with a job offer in Canada. It was a stroke of luck that worked out well!

I chose to come and live in Montreal. I couldn't see myself anywhere else, I love living in the city and taking advantage of all the activities the city has to offer (restaurants, bars, museums, festivals, etc.) and Montreal has all these possibilities and it's really great!

🎙Mechanical Designer... What does your day-to-day job involve?

So to simplify things a bit, my work is articulated in 4 main missions:

  1. The definition of specifications with the customer. I intervene after the sales department when they have sold the machine.
  1. The realization of the studies, the most important task of my job. It includes several steps: the research of solution to answer the needs of the customer, then the CAD modeling, the creation of plans of parts for the manufacturing services and the assembly plans for the assembly services. We also have to define the choice of material (cylinders, motors, etc.) in this step.
  1. Collaboration and project follow-up between the different departments of the company: automation, manufacturing, assembly, purchasing, etc.
  1. Customer relationship management to ensure customer satisfaction.

🎙Are your professional assignments different from those you had in your job in France?

No, there is no difference on the missions. The only difference I noticed was the difference in measurements. In Canada, we work with the imperial and metric system, whereas in France, we only use the metric system. That is, millimeters or inches... It's a little bit of an adjustment at first, but then it becomes easy.

🎙How did you find your job in Canada?

Talentech contacted me directly via LinkedIn and offered me a position as a mechanical designer. I must admit that I was only curious at first, but a few months later, they contacted me again and I made the decision to move to Canada with my wife.

🎙What's your experience with the Talentech team?

It went really well! I had and still have a very good contact with the whole team. I really appreciated their unfailing follow-up, they always accompanied me and helped me when I needed it.

They also listened to my professional expectations and made sure to offer me tailor-made positions.

And the little extra, the team is nice, young with a very friendly mindset which brings another dynamic in a heavy process like immigration!

🎙How was your expat experience in Montreal?

Very well, the longest part was to make my passport and to wait for it. Then the paperwork went well. It's not the most fun part, but it goes well.

As far as moving was concerned, it was quite simple. We started with a rental via Airbnb and then we also quickly found a place to live in Montreal thanks to a real estate broker.

🎙What advice(s) would you give to someone who is still hesitant to come to Canada?

Do not hesitate to come to Canada! We are lucky to have agreements between France and Canada that allow us, French, to come easily in record time. I think that you should not miss your chance and go for it. You just have to think about getting your passport quickly, because you need it for all the procedures to enter the country, and you can be delayed if you don't have it.

Otherwise, it's really an amazing experience to live, I recommend it to everyone!
